Index for Finger Weight/Movement Observations Between E-Shape Barre and Open Position Chords

Assumptions

This article assumes that you understand the Music Alphabet and its application to the fretboard. (This can be found in the article Root/5th Chords)

This article assumes that you understand, and have experience with, finger weight and movement awareness with open position chord shapes. (This can be found in Open Position Major, Minor & 7th Chords / Introduction to Finger Weight & Movement Awareness)

E-Shape Barre

A “Barre” simply refers to one finger being used to play more that one string simultaneously. Any chord that requires this is a “barre chord” however the term is often used to define moving the common open position chord shapes up the fretboard.

All of the Open Position Chord Shapes can be moved up the fretboard using a barre however, some are more convenient and common than others. One of the most common is the Open Position E Chord. When moved up the fretboard using a barre, this shape is referred to as an “E-Shape Barre Chord“. Since you will create the barre needed to move the open strings with finger 1, you need to play the notes you normally play with fingers 1, 2 & 3 in the open position E chord with fingers 2, 3 & 4 respectively.

ETC.

“E Shape” barre chords are named in reference to the 6th string, the same way the Root/5th chord on string group 6/5 is named. Apply the Music Alphabet to name the chords all along the fretboard.

To ease the physical challenges, start by playing the “E-Shape” barre chord with your barre at the 9th.  The frets get closer together as the fret number increases which makes the weight distribution much easier when playing this shape with your barre in the higher numbered frets.  Slowly work your way toward the 1st fret, moving 1 fret at a time.

All derivatives of the “E-Shape” barre chord, i.e. minor and 7th – are also named by applying the Music Alphabet to the 6th string.

E-Shape (Minor)

ETC.

E-Shape (7th)

ETC.

In practice, there will be times where you will want to use an “E-Shape” barre chord for every chord in the song. In these cases you will be sliding the “E-Shape” barre chord to the correct location on the fretboard to get the chord you want. Doing this is mostly about developing efficient weight distribution among your fingers so your hand doesn’t become fatigued, and maintaining the integrity of the shape as you move from location to location.

Sometimes when you are using the “E-Shape” exclusively in a song and E, Emi, or E7 is part of the chord progression, you may want to consider fingering these chords as if they were barre chords – even though these are open position chords:

The other, likely more often, way you will use these chord shapes is integrating them with other open position shapes. Doing this requires thoughtful consideration of the finger weight and movement awareness. The remainder of this article is a catalogue of finger weight and movement awareness observations E-Shape barre and open position chords for you to reference as needed.
